The Complete Guide to Google Business Profile Optimization in Singapore
Every field and feature of Google Business Profile explained — from basic setup to advanced ranking tactics — with a monthly maintenance routine.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly Google My Business) is the single most valuable free asset your business has for local search. Most businesses in Singapore use maybe 30% of what it can do. Here's how to actually optimise it — every field, every feature, in order of impact.
Foundation: fields you MUST get right
Business name
Use your exact legal or branded name. Do not add keywords ("Best Cafe in Tampines Cafe") — Google penalises this and can suspend your listing. If your business is "Green Bean" and you sell coffee, your listing name is "Green Bean", not "Green Bean Cafe Coffee Tampines".
Primary category
This is one of the biggest ranking factors. Pick the MOST SPECIFIC category that matches your business. If you're a Japanese restaurant, pick "Japanese Restaurant" not "Restaurant". If you're a coffee shop, "Coffee Shop" not "Cafe" (they're different in Google's taxonomy).
You can add up to 9 secondary categories — use them all if relevant. But don't add categories that don't apply just to appear in more searches; Google detects this pattern and suppresses the listing.
Address
Match your actual postal address exactly — down to the block number and unit format. Consistency with what appears on your website and other directories matters (Google cross-references).
Phone number
Use a local Singapore number (+65) if you serve Singapore customers. Toll-free numbers (1800) work but track less well. Never use tracking numbers that redirect — Google may flag mismatches with what shows on your website.
Business hours
Set accurate hours and update them for public holidays. Google shows "Closed" or "Hours may vary" warnings if data looks unreliable, which suppresses your visibility.
High-impact optimisations most businesses skip
Photos (both quantity and quality)
Listings with 20+ photos get significantly more clicks than listings with 5. Photos also help Google understand what your business actually does. Upload:
- Storefront (exterior + entrance)
- Interior wide shots
- Product/service photos (menu items, treatment rooms, work examples)
- Team photos (adds trust)
- Behind-the-scenes (adds authenticity)
Refresh photos monthly — Google treats fresh content as an activity signal.
Google Posts (weekly at minimum)
Posts appear on your listing and give Google fresh content to associate with your business. Post at least once a week — offers, events, updates, product launches. Businesses using Posts weekly rank better than businesses that don't, all else equal.
Q&A section
The Q&A section shows on your listing. If it's empty, competitors' questions may appear instead (weird Google feature). Seed it yourself by adding 5-10 common questions and answering them. This also gets you additional keyword coverage.
Services and Products
List every service or product you offer with descriptions and prices. This is another opportunity to include relevant keywords naturally and helps Google match you to searches for specific services.
Attributes
These appear as tags on your listing ("Wheelchair accessible", "Free WiFi", "Dine-in", etc.). Enable every attribute that applies. They influence which "filters" your listing appears for in Google Maps searches.
The review strategy that beats competitors
Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for local search. But quantity alone isn't enough — Google looks at:
- Rating (4.5+ is the effective floor for top 3 ranking)
- Recency (fresh reviews count more)
- Response rate (respond to every review, positive or negative)
- Review length + specificity (detailed reviews weigh more than 5-word ones)
- Reviewer credibility (Local Guides carry more weight)

Things that HURT your ranking (avoid these)
- Keyword-stuffing your business name
- Adding fake categories to appear in more searches
- Marking your address as a service area when you have a real storefront
- Not responding to reviews (especially negative ones)
- Old photos that don't match your current business
- Inconsistent business info across your website and directories
- Empty Q&A section (competitors' questions may appear)
Monthly maintenance routine (15 min/week)
- Monday: Post a Google Post (offer, event, update)
- Wednesday: Reply to any new reviews from the past week
- Friday: Upload 2-3 new photos
- Monthly: Check hours are accurate, holiday hours updated, Q&A has recent answers
